Foreword

Dear Readers,

We are pleased to present to you the 114th issue of bilig. In this issue, we feature seven research articles that approach the Turkic world from a broad and multifaceted perspective. The articles cover a diverse range of topics—from the tradition of gift-giving in Silk Road diplomacy to Hungary’s foreign policy, from Zeki Velidi Togan’s writings in “Il” newspaper to university students’ attitudes toward family and marriage, from the Gagauz community in Edirne to refugee policies in Japan and Türkiye, and to how recent evelopments in the Eastern Mediterranean are reflected in the Cypriot press.

bilig, one of the few journals in the field of social sciences in Türkiye indexed in the SSCI, continues to enhance its international visibility through its high-quality academic content and interdisciplinary approach. In this regard, we are pleased to share a gratifying development with you: according to the data from the 2024 Journal Citation Report published by Clarivate Analytics, our journal has increased its impact factor from 0.2 to 0.4 and has risen from the Q4 category to Q3. This advancement not only reflects the academic progression of our journal but also highlights the growing recognition of Turkic world studies within the international academic community. One of the most significant indicators of this is the increasing number of citations from journals published outside of Türkiye, in countries such as the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Russia, Latvia, Greece, Switzerland, and Cuba. As we have previously emphasized, identifying missing citations in WoS and reporting these omissions to ensure the completeness of citation data is crucial for the accurate measurement of our journal’s impact factor. This success has been made possible thanks to both the meticulous technical follow-up of these processes and the rigorous editorial practices carried out during the article review stages by our Editorial Board. Most importantly, it has been achieved through the invaluable contributions of you—our esteemed authors, reviewers, and readers.

One of the key issues we address in this issue is the word limit stated in our publication guidelines. In response to requests and needs expressed by our authors, the Editorial Board has decided to revise the maximum word count for both Turkish and English submissions. As of this issue, the updated guideline is as follows: “Turkish articles, including the abstract and references, must not exceed 8,000 (eight thousand) words, while English articles should be fewer than 10,000 (ten thousand) words. At the beginning of each article, a concise abstract of no more than 200 words must be provided in both Turkish and English, and the article should be clearly summarized.”

We hope that the recent developments concerning our journal, as well as this new issue, will meaningfully contribute to the scientific community. We extend our sincere thanks to all researchers and reviewers who have contributed to this endeavor.
